A final Cold War victory?
Radio Free Europe, a onetime Democratic tool, officially opens its new headquarters Friday in a former bastion of Communism in Prague.
Czech Republic president Vaclav Havel, has secured a reduced rent for R-F-E in the former federal parliament building.
Prague - it's known as the City of a Thousand Spires - and now it will be known as the home of Radio Free Europe and its sister station, Radio Liberty.
Initially funded by the U-S Central Intelligence Agency the broadcasting network has been based in Munich since 1949.
Their transmitters were focused east where they aimed to disrupt Communist governments and send hope to the people behind the Iron Curtain.
The CIA funding was replaced by alternative U-S government funding in the 1970s but that money has been recently reduced by fiscal cuts.
Now Radio Free Europe's transmitters are poised to continue broadcasting in 19 languages from new, less expensive headquarters in Prague.
SOUNDBITE:
"Our kind of broadcasting, which is broadcasting about the region in its own languages, from the region, really depended on
being in contact with what was happening out here and the transformation, the democratic transformations, the rebuilding of civil societies and the transformation of economic processes, all this broadcast line that we deal with seemed to me, we were much more in touch with that here, if we could be in Prague."
SUPER CAPTION: Kevin Klose, President RFE/RL
Although the official launch ceremony takes place Friday Radio Free Europe has been broadcasting in the former Czechoslovak federal parliament since June.
The new radio suites are a stone's throw from where the Warsaw Pact forces quelled the 1968 Prague Spring. Down the road is where the former dissident playwright and now president of the Czech Republic Vaclav Havel first addressed cheering, free crowds in 1989.
Even after the boxes are unpacked, Radio Free Europe says its mission still includes providing objective reporting on local issues, integrating Eastern and Western Europe, and explaining Western democracy.
